Pleo: the little packaged dinosaur
16 July 2008 | By Popsop Team
Ugobe has created what is destined to probably be the hit toy of 2007 with their amazing robotic engineering. There creation is Pleo the first life form dinosaur. Pleo was originally created based off a long extinct dinosaur named the Camarasaurus from the Jurassic period.
The thing that really separates Pleo from the other robotic toys out there is that Pleo has a memory and is capable of experiencing emotions. Pleo will show visual signs that he is tired such as yawning or stretching and will exhibit signs of hunger by stomping or by making sounds. He is also capable of the following actions: yawn, sigh, sniff, sniffle, snore, cough, hiccup, and sneeze.
Ugobe’s Pleo is equipped with the ability to sense sight, touch and sound, and over time will develop his own unique personality just like a human being. He can sense when edges are near, and is capable of being frightened by loud noises or sudden motions.
The packaging for Pleo robot was designed by San Francisco based Perspective Branding.”The challenge was to create a new brand (including identity, look and feel, and packaging structure) for the launch of Ugobe’s first Lifeform PLEO. PLEO is an autonomous robot that displays emotions and interacts with its environment. One of the keys to the proposition was ensuring that PLEO was seen as pet-like consumer electronics product and not a toy. We visualized this on the package by having a key image of PLEO walking away from you on the front on the pack, breaking category conventions and communicating autonomy.”
