UK-based ingredients firm Cobell is targeting convenience trends by launching juice and smoothie boxes, similar to bag-in-box wine, in the country.

The Juice and Smoothie boxes, available in three, five or 10-litre sizes, use a self-sealing tap to allow consumers to pour juice straight from the fridge, Cobell said.

The group, which announced the launch on 1 September, said it was already working with distributors to supply the foodservice sector in Devon and Sussex.

It added that it was “in discussion with a number of direct-to-customer channels to launch both branded and jointly branded juice and smoothie boxes”.

Smoothie volume sales in the UK rose by 44% to 75m litres in 2007, according to the Britvic Soft Drinks Report, published in April. Still and juice drinks recorded a 3% rise to reach 1.28bn litres, with not-from-concentrate accounting for more than a fifth of sales.

Cobell business development manager for Europe, Simon Pearson, said: “There has been a lot of interest from clients who want to develop their own special blends. Our research and development facility at our Exeter headquarters is open to both large and small customers and our ability to package modest quantities of bespoke blends is a real advantage to smaller establishments.

“We are confident that Juice Box and Smoothie Box are the perfect products to meet the ever increasing public demand for healthy juices and smoothies.”

The products are produced at Cobell’s aseptic and packaging facility near Exeter. They have a 14-day shelf-life once opened, if kept chilled, and can be stored for six months before opening, the firm claimed.
