Marks & Spencer criticised at Labour conference for sweets at tills

Marks & Spencer has been attacked by a consumer watchdog for refusing to remove confectionery from the checkout area in its stores.
Speaking at an event at the Labour Party Conference in Manchester, Lord Whitty, chairman of Consumer Focus, said he found it ‘extraordinary’ that Marks & Spencer was now the only major retailer that continued to place sweets at its checkouts.
This is despite a long-running campaign by the organization to end the practice as it encourages children to pester parents for sweets. Lord Whitty told Marketing that the retailer had given no indication that it intends to change this.
