Impress Metal Packaging’s self-dispensing 10-litre beer keg (TenCan) for Heineken has won the Supreme Gold Award at the 2008 Best in Metal awards organised by the Metal Packaging Manufacturers’ Association.
The TenCan, which impressed the judges for pushing the boundaries in what was possible with a metal pack as well as its aesthetic appeal, also took gold in the technical innovation, consumer appeal and alcoholic beverage categories.
The keg, developed jointly by Heineken Beer Systems and Impress, features a patented integrated pressure system to keep the beer fresh for 30 days after opening. Distortion printing and a special lacquer are said to give the container a brilliant appearance. The special shaping of the top and bottom of the keg was undertaken using Impress production processes.
The plastic handles assembled after filling are designed to provide convenient handling for the consumer and allow storage of the tapping device.
Earlier in August 2008 The Heineken TenCan Beer Keg was acclaimed as the ‘Best of the Best’ by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and won the President’s Gold Award. It was the first time this accolade went to a rigid metal container.
