Dorothy Goodbody takes top bottled beer award

12 August 2008

A bottled beer brand Dorothy Goodbody won a top award at the Great British Beer Festival (GBBF) at London’s Earl’s Court this week.

Earlier this year, anti-alcohol pressure group Alcohol Concern complained to the Portman Group, the drinks industry watchdog, about the image of a young woman on the Dorothy Goodbody’s label.

Alcohol Concern said: “The drawing of a young woman, whose dress is pulled back to reveal her thighs (whilst also hinting at a lack of undergarments) is sexually suggestive and contravenes both the spirit and the letter of [the drinks industry code of practice].”

The Portman Group’s independent complaints panel accepted the argument of the brewery that the label image was “intended to capture the spirit of fun andinnocence of 1950s rural Herefordshire”.
