Last week I was having coffee with Adam Morgan from Eat Big Fish, and conversation turned to the contrasting architecture of the Shard versus the Tower of London. What seemed to us to be a delicious juxtaposition of the past and the future is a blot on the landscape to UNESCO.
The two Italian brands, well-known for their recognizable, flawless industrial design—the automaker Fiat and the appliance company Smeg—have given a second birth to a classic car model Fiat 500, turning a front part of it into a retro-styled mini refrigerator that can serve as a nice interior decoration for any bar or a house.
BMW has collaborated with internationally celebrated French design duo, brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, to create a state-of-the-art installation for the Salone del Mobile 2013, taking place in Milan April 9-14. The new construction named QUIET MOTION mirrors the BMW’s design philosophy and the fair’s mission to showcase the innovative approaches in the field of furniture and living space design.
The Design Business Association, the UK organization that measures and rates the effectiveness of design in a range of categories by using commercial data to evaluate the success, announced the winners of its annual Design Effectiveness Awards, which included projects by leading design agencies. The ceremony, which was held in London on February 16, brought together 450 industry leaders, who received 62 gold, silver and bronze trophies, awarded by the association this year in 12 categories.
Renowned product and packaging design agency Product Ventures is pleased to announce that its design for the Petrol Bags™ All-In-One Carrier and Camera Support has been selected to receive the 2011 International Design Excellence Award (IDEA). For over 30 years, the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) has recognized through their preeminent international design competition, the IDEA Awards design excellence in product, sustainability, interaction design, packaging, strategy, research and concepts.
Citroën in cooperation with France-based aerodynamic simulation software company EXA announced EV Design Challenge—a contest for students of Royal College of Art in London. The future designers were tasked with creating a compelling ultra-compact model that could establish a unique Citroën e-vehicle aesthetic for the future. In course of the challenge, the car manufacturer unveiled some key industry figures to the students, thus providing them a better insight into car design industry. It also organized a trip to PSA design center — where the most eye-catching concepts of Peugeot and Citroën’s models are born.
Burger King Corp. announced at the end of last year it planned to overhaul its 12,000 restaurants worldwide in order to bring an updated experience to its customers and boost sales. According to Boston.com, “the new interiors include rotating red flame chandeliers, brilliant TV-screen menus, and industrial-inspired corrugated metal and brick walls”.
