Jonas King (Vanderbilt University, Department of Biological Sciences, Nashville, USA) with his image of 100 times magnified Anopheles mosquito’s heart colored with fluorescence technology scooped the $3,000 first prize.

International Design Consultancy P&W has enjoyed further success at the Pentawards this year. The consultancy’s range of Kids cereals for Tesco’s fast-growing US chain Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market has won a bronze Pentaward, presented at the official Pentawards ceremony at the Shanghai EXPO 2010. The three-strong range, Cookie Bites, Cocoa Sharks and Apple & Cinnamon Smiles, is designed to achieve cut-through in a category replete with bright colors, artificial flavors and cartoon characters, including well-known licenses such as The Flintstones, and TV «stars» such as Count Chocula.

Natural glacial mineral water Isklar has won a Design Business Association Design Effectiveness Award thanks to its dazzling design created by integrated branding Blue Marlin. The Design Effectiveness Awards is the only award scheme in the world to evaluate design projects based on hard commercial data. Isklar’s success has been nothing short of remarkable. The brand grew 619 per cent in the 12 months to April 2010 (Neilsen) despite the total UK mineral water market experiencing an environmental backlash, being under immense competitive pressure and seeing volume continue to decline overall.

Coca-Cola Great Britain (CCGB) yesterday announced a new three year partnership with StreetGames, a national charity set up to help young people in disadvantaged communities get active and participate in sports. Nike teamed up with creative agency Wieden + Kennedy Shanghai to make a hilarious gift to the fans of the iconic sportswear brand and comic books. The creative unit collaborated with artist and animator Anthony Francisco Schepperd to make a vibrant graphic novel, which features the celebrated Chinese hurdler Liu Xiang, “more than a flying man,” turned into a super hero of modern times.
