Each year in June, the Côte d’Azur becomes the place with an overwhelming concentration of ‘lions’ (not animals, but beastly amazing advertising pieces) thanks to the Cannes Lions Festival of Creativity. This year’s event, which was taking place June 19–25, saw “thought-leaders and experts in all forms of communications and creative thinking come together to inspire, debate and entertain” and revealed the best advertising projects from all around the globe.

Doritos has initiated another fight between its flavours to see which of them is the ‘strongest’. Building on success of other themed advertising pieces, which included the spots for the Egyptian and U.S. markets as well as the large-scaled ‘The End’ promotion in Canada, where people were encouraged to ‘destroy’ one of the new additions, A (in the white bag) or B (in the black bag), the snack brand has kicked off a similar integrated promotion for Australian consumers at the www.battleoftheflavours.com website. Now, two new Doritos flavours, Hot Mexican Salsa and Thai Sweet Chilli, are placed against one another on the digital spot, and consumers are invited to support their favourite by suggesting the effective battle moves against the competitor.

The smart brand, which last year started a war against dumb, is now getting more friendly and romantic. It kicked off a lovely international campaign developed at BBDO Berlin and revolving around travelling together in a car, which is designed just for couples, trying something new and being unique. The tagline of smart fortwo’s advertising push, which was launched across multiply media including print, online and TV, is ‘smart fortwo—A big idea for…’ mirrors the light-hearted and adventurous nature of the brand.

Starbucks is continuing the activity dedicated to its 40th anniversary by introducing new offerings and designs as well as announcing upcoming events revolving around the big date. Yesterday, March 8, Popsop reported on the launch of the new logo of the brand and previewed a range of volunteering projects slated for April, and now the new Starbucks eco-store design, unveiled in Knightsbridge (London), gets into the spotlight.

Frito-Lay is continuing its global campaign focused on promoting the fact of its Lay’s chips’ naturalness. This summer, residents of San Francisco could see a first-of-its-kind handcrafted billboard, which had been carved for 10 days in the open air on one of the city’s streets. Now, the Canadian division of the company has launched a print & TV campaign on the same theme to introduce consumers to real farmers, who supply potatoes for the brand.

Doritos Australia has eventually named the winner of its “Doritos Make an Ad, Make a Fortune” national contest, which started in May. For the second consecutive year, the brand in cooperation with the Sydney-based Clemenger BBDO agency was encouraging creative minds from all across the country to enter the competition and become rich by creating a funny 29-second ad about Doritos. This year’s winner, 21-year old Alex George, managed to win the heart of the judges and voters with his ‘Tasmanian’ commercial and received $30 as the prize for sharing a piece of his creativity with Australia.
