American scientists came to the sad conclusion that a healthy diet is not available to everyone, and such a diet is introduced into practice mainly by people from wealthy backgrounds. Those who have an average, below average and low income it is easier to buy fast food. It, as you know, does not need to be cooked, and it costs several times cheaper. But how does all this affect the health? It’s not a secret that part of the American population suffers from obesity and other problems associated with digestion and metabolism. Is not it the case that people simply do not have enough money to maintain their bodies in a normal state?

According to statistics, about 30% of food in the US is turned into food waste for minor production reasons (for example, packaging damage). The former president of the company Trader Joe’s Doug Rauch decided to sell such products at affordable prices and founded a budget retail chain in the Daily Table format. The assortment of goods consists exclusively of healthy eco-products: fruits, vegetables, cereals, greens, etc. The first market was opened in Dorchester (Boston, USA). On the sign near the main entrance in large letters it was written: «A ton of goods at $1».

The main goal of the retail chain founder was the price opposition of healthy food to fast food, which is so loved by modern Americans. And indeed, on the website of the store there is a catalog of products, at a price inferior to fast food. For example, a dozen of eggs at $1.29, flakes at $0.70 and tuna at $0.55. For especially lazy people, even there is an assortment of cooked food variants.

What is the benefit of selling goods at such a low price for stores? The fact is that Rauch concludes quite profitable deals with suppliers who are ready to supply goods with a minor spoilage at «ridiculous prices» or completely free of charge. This also means that the markets do not receive stable supplies. Suppose, in one order they can get an overabundance of corn, and in another — zucchini.

Nevertheless, the company is thriving and now more than 5,000 stores are preparing for the opening. Everyone can use the Daily Table, but you need to apply for membership. This allows the company to track the number of customers, generate demand and note which districts and cities buy more.

«When 49 million Americans do not know how to eat right, it affects not only their health (they get obesity, heart disease, diabetes in adolescence and young age), but the entire health care of the country,» Rauch says. «For us, this is not charity, but innovations that significantly reduce the amount of food waste in the country, positively affect the welfare of the population and make the dream of a healthy diet a reality for everyone.
