Google is getting ready to launch a web-based storage service called ‘Google Drive,’ which will offer such features as a native syncing software that enables users to install the service on various computers and mobile devices.
Now Google has a particular amount of cloud storage—Google Docs, but it’s hardly used by many users for online storage beyond the files they use in Docs. The Google Drive enters the technology arena to compete with Amazon, Dropbox, and the upcoming Apple iCloud service to be released this fall.
Google Drive will include a ‘My Google Drive’ area for various folders and other specific tools. For example, you can simply drag and drop a document on your computer into this new Google Drive sync app that delivers it to another computer.
The first attempt to launch something like that was made in 2007 but it was quite ‘raw’. This new version is expected to be much better, says Tech Crunch. Since 2010, Google has positioned Goggle Docs as a sort of Google Drive, so it’s not a surprise that the new service will actually be Google Docs rebranded.
The time of the roll-out is not known yet but it’s expected to be pretty soon and maybe even coincides with the new version of Android which is to be available next month. It’s clear that users can get a certain (and ever-increasing) amount for free, and the more space can be purchased.
Google provides users with an always increasing amount of free storage for Gmail, Google Docs, Picasa, and the other services.
Currently, Google is working on the expansion of its Wallet, an app that replaces a traditional billfold.
