MTV has launched a ranking of musicians, based on the real-time buzz around the web. The iconic company, known for its dedication to giving young music talents with an opportunity to promote themselves and providing audience with an opportunity to stay tuned into the latest news in the field, presents Music Meter site, which mostly features emerging performers.
The ranking system was first presented yesterday, December 14, with an enhanced version to be launched next March. Unlike the popular channel, the online destination showcases a daily list of the top 100 artists who may seem not that popular in their country and abroad, but still generate a lot of buzz over the web. Each of the musicians has a profile page, which provides readers with basic bios, videos and images, as well as related tweets and news stories, which were aggregated from across the web in real time and actually drove this artist to the position in the rating he or she (or they, if it’s a band) is holding now. So far, the first page features up-and-coming artists like Mike Posner and Wacka Flocka Flame, but there’s no sign of established pop music celebrities with international fame.
Shannon Connolly, MTV’s vp, digital music strategy, commented that their intention was to create a service “to really reflect what is happening at a given moment in the whole music ecosystem… based on velocity and buzz, not total popularity. The spirit of this is to be a jumping off point for music discovery.” The music by the artists featured on the website can be purchased from MP3.Rapsody.com (iTunes is not involved so far), and the users also can search for other artists of the similar style to get the same discovery experience on the site, which will be soon available to browse also on Android devices and iPhones.
