Hurley and Nike have teamed up with the Otis College of Art and Design to open its ‘Considered’ art-and-fashion exhibit at Hurley’s H Space Gallery in Costa Mesa, CA.
Nike and Hurley have already collaborated with each other and opened a Salvation concept store in Malibu earlier this year. This time the brands got involved into the Otis college sustainability initiative.
The exhibit features a 18-look collection, which debuted in spring via a live runway show at the Beverly Hilton and was created by students that participated in a mentorship program created by Rosemary Brantley, chair of fashion design at Otis. Students had to reconsider fashion and work within the parameters of the Nike Considered Index, an online tool that helps designers understand the long-term environmental effects of their products. With help of the tool students looked through all aspects of the garments supply chain, from the origins of the fiber to disposal of the used clothing.
While creating designs, students had to dwell on three actual topics: ‘regenerative,’ which focuses on recycling and repurposing salvaged materials into new designs; ‘heirloom,’ which deals with creating timeless designs that become more valuable with age and use; and ‘sustainable design,’ that uses modern solutions, including materials, construction, and afterlife of garments, says Ecouterre.
The program was launched to raise awareness of sustainable trends in apparel producing not only among designers but among consumers that choose what clothing to buy—sustainable or not.
“Consumers of the future will choose brands that can find solutions to challenges without compromising design or aesthetic,” said Rosemary Brantly. “Designers who excel at creating beautiful and sustainable product will be the leaders of our future.”
The exhibit will run at H Space until December 16. Then it will be displayed at the Nike headquarters in Beaverton, OR. The collection can be viewed on Facebook.
