Thoughts on Facebook’s «Massive Invasion», Blogging and the Future of Media

“I don’t want to see us descend into a nation of bloggers…”
Is blogging there to stay? What will happen to so much-hyped social media? The future is not as clear as it may seem.

Looking for pros and cons of «Facebook massive invasion» I came across these impressive illustrations by a certain Oversocialized Flickr user. They made me sure that I was not alone in my attitude to social media and FB in particular.

I personally can hardly find a minute to check my Facebook, left alone writing in my personal blog. Well, weekends are different but I am still not very keen on sharing my ideas with the world, family and friends in my web blogging space when I do have some time. Blogging and social-media hysteria will have to go.

Nowadays, almost every other specialist or expert are writing about something in their blogs almost every day (some do every hour). But is this information reliable? How about news dripping from the blogs, would you trust them? Will blogging ever give up to books, newspapers or peaceful one-line “twittering”? I don’t know about you, but I feel like when you’re busy doing real-world work you have very little time to sit and write for free for the sake of gaining a bit of traffic and getting famous among, say, 1,000 unknown folks.

I tend to believe that blogs, facebooks and twitters will either leave without a trace or become gradually replaced with new social-media monsters, having stunningly new features and possibilities. Yeah, Mr. Zuckerberg would strongly disagree here but do you remember the fame of MySpace in good old days? FB will have to go or transform completely. Blogging is further distilled leaving only the most prominent writers and online marketers.

D8 with Steve Jobs proved my point. Sort of. He said: “I don’t want to see us descend into a nation of bloggers…I think we need editorial oversight now more than ever. Anything we can do to help newspapers find new ways of expression that will help them get paid, I am all for.» He could not say it better. The word “descend” says it all. Misguided by convenient Internet access and easy-to-use blogging engines, millions of people decided to become “writers” overnight. But they can’t. As a result the web is flooded with tons of trash.

The time to change communication matters has come, as did the necessity for editorial. The Internet went through its evolution, primordial ooze, stage already and now we need to clean it up a little bit. Steve Jobs intention to help top-rate newspapers and magazines survive and new iPhone 4 with HD-video, iBooks and FaceTime features should contribute to shallow social media and blogging world.
