Björk’s Biophilia album, which was launched back in 2011 as the first-ever multimedia album with an array of iPhone and iPad apps, is about to get a second life on other platforms. The artist has created a project on the Kickstarter platform, asking the global community to support the development of the apps on the Android and Windows 8 operating systems to make it easier (and cheaper) to use it within the Biophilia Educational Program. The minimum donation is just £1, and the expected amount is at least £375,000 (the deadline is February 27).
The much-debated experimental multimedia album by Björk, which includes a set of instruments (apps), helps teach youngsters from all backgrounds about the connection between music, nature and technology. Since the iPad platform (the initial version of the album runs on it) is a bit more expensive than educators want, the celebrity asks to help bring the Biophilia app to more affordable devices running on Android and Windows 8.
If the project gets the proper funding, the developers will reprogram the app for the above-mentioned platforms to enable more educators and young students to explore the nature, space and technology with the help of music (and vice versa) within the ongoing Biophilia Educational Program. In November 2012, GigaOm published a research, which outlined the trends on the crowdfunding platform. As it turned out, the number of projects rose to 50% to 76,909 for the second half of 2012, and 44% of projects were successfully funded (the average rising on the site it set between $1,000 and $10,000). As to the categories, “Dance” projects are the most successful ones on the platform (70% of such initiatives get the required funding), while “Fashion” is the least popular category there (only around 33% of such projects get the full amount of funding).
