From now on, Facebookers can share information on where they actually are at the moment with a set of special features called Facebook Places. With its help, the social media users, logged in on the site from their mobile phone, can post the information on their current location wherever they are right now to be able to meet some friends or just people with related interests, who are nearby right now.

The process of tagging yourself is simple: a user is invited to access the Places through his or her iPhone app or by going directly to touch.facebook.com (if the mobile browser supports HTML 5 and geolocation). Then the user clicks on the «Check In» button to see the list of places near, selects the best-matching spot (or add a new one) and that’s all. Once a user has done all of these things, the information appears on the Recent Activity section of his or her friend’s page. Users can also see who is near their current location at the moment.

The information is not limited to only location data, as users also can tag friends they are with at the moment in a status update, or just write something in the status line. If users don’t want to be tagged, they can turn off the «Include me in ‘People Here Now’ after I check in» privacy control feature, and they also can remove their name added by others just like ‘erasing’ a photo tag.  To date, the service is available only for the US users.

“[Places will] help people stay connected everywhere they go, not just at their computer,” said Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg. The users seem to be protected in the new service, still, the launch of Facebook Places is sure to initiate a new round of talk on privacy protection. But Facebook is all about disclosing everything about everyone, isn’t it?
