Panasonic Collaborates with Australian Macquarie University to Find More Effective Eco Solutions

Panasonic is launching its largest eco-initiative in Australia by providing support to Macquarie University’s project, which is revolving around researches on climate risks. The global company teams up with the institution to work on the scientific and education issues focused on the green theme for three consecutive years. It has also created the Panasonic Chair in Environmental Sustainability, headed by internationally acclaimed Australian scientist, explorer and conservationist, Professor Tim Flannery, to make the collaboration yet more effective.

There has never been a more pressing need for cutting-edge environmental research and education and we are pleased to be able to lend our support to Macquarie University. We hope it will assist Macquarie University in remaining at the forefront of global environmental understanding and discussion,” stated Steve Rust, Managing Director at Panasonic Australia.

The new collaboration comes as an extension of the Panasonic Asia Pacific ‘eco ideas’ Declaration 2010, which was announced in June. Under the new commitment, the manufacturer wants 80% of its total sales be contributed by eco-friendly products and is going to reduce CO2 emissions from production by 500,000 tons—both to be done by March 2013. It was also agreed on that Macquarie University will send the reports on its environmental researches to head office of the Japanese company to help it coordinate the activities in the green area and achieve the ‘eco ideas’ goals.

Panasonic’s support will help us pursue new and important areas of research and public education. As such, it is of vital importance to Macquarie University. Strong partnerships with industry, the community and research organisations are vitally important as we continue to research and communicate issues around climate change impact,” commented Professor Steven Schwartz, Vice-Chancellor, Macquarie University.
