“The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier” exhibit arrives in Brooklyn

Jean Paul Gaultier is inviting the world to explore his «road to triumph» on the international fashion scene. The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk, the first international exhibit of the renowned haute couture and prêt-à-porter designer, is now open at the Brooklyn Museum from October 25 through February 23.

The multimedia exhibition illustrates all the phases in Gaultier’s career as a fashion designer. The display covers seven key themes that influenced the creative ethos of the genius who has been shaping fashion since 1970s. Visitors to the display will see around 140 haute couture and prêt-à-porter ensembles, taken from different time periods of Gaultier’s professional life to illustrate the transformation of the designer’s outlook. The items on display range from accessories, sketches and stage costumes to visual content like excerpts from films, footage from runway shows, dance performances, photographs by fashion photographers, and more.

Many of the ensembles are unveiled “on custom mannequins with interactive faces created by high-definition audiovisual projections.” This all is for a more impressive display of futuristic, playful, transformative and truly innovative garments that were inspired by a range of themes, from technolog y and space to re-imagined gender aesthetics and cultural diversity. The display also pays tribute to celebrities—muses—who inspired many of Gaultier’s works.

The prices for tickets range from $15 (a standard adult tickets) to $10 (for students, adults 62 and over, corporate members, and cultural colleagues). It’s the second stop of the international tour that started in Stockholm in summer—after visiting the USA, the exhibit will travel to London in April.
