On March 21, Twitter celebrated its 7th birthday. To mark the occasion, the company has released a short video that shows how some of the most prominent moments of the past 7 years were reflected on Twitter.
With 200 million active users posting over 400 million messages each day, Twitter is now one of the world’s popular channels for sharing news and opinions in real time. Since 2006, Twitter has reshaped the way people watch TV, exchange information and make purchasing decisions. It has also evolved into a powerful PR tool and set the “hashtag in the tagline” trend in advertising. As a tribute to the super high velocity of the platform’s development, the slideshow-like video narration, “Celebrating #Twitter7,” is actually a fast journey from the bottom to the top.
The retrospective video starts with a prototype Twitter page drawn on a sheet of lined paper and the debut tweet—“just setting up my twittr” by @jack, Twitter’s co-founder Jack Dorsey. They are followed by micro posts by famous people as well as themes including the earthquake in Japan, protests in Egypt, London 2012, World Cup, Grammy’s, New York Fashion Week and more. The spot also features Barack Obama’s “Four More Years” most retweeted photo, shows a map of connections to demonstrate how massively Japanese messages were retweeted in 2011, and compares the peaks of tweeting activity during the Word Cup matches.
The video also highlights some milestones in the company’s life such as introduction of hashtags and retweets, creation of the official Twitter service in Japan, the boost of the platform’s popularity in the UK and the launch of Vine, Twitter’s 6-second video service.
