adidas Will Be Selling $1 Shoe in India

adidas has unveiled its plans to launch a shoe costing one dollar a pair and called USD1 to reflect the marketing idea—in India. The same project didn’t work in Bangladesh last year but adidas claims that it would be successful on the growing Indian market.

“The shoe will be sold in villages through a distribution network. We want the product to be self-funding.” Herbert Heiner, adidas CEO told the Sunday newspaper Die Welt am Sonntag.

It’s not known yet when or where it would be launched. Last year the company rolled out the same initiative in Bangladesh but it had not worked as expected.

“We sold 5,000 pairs during a test phase but we made only losses,” Heiner said. “The shoes cost us three dollars to make and we had to pay USD 3.50 in import duty.”

According to adidas, it has been raising its full-year earnings targets after a stronger-than-expected third quarter and first nine months. It has boosted its sales up to 12% instead of 10% previously, while earnings per share were projected to rise by nearly 16%.

In addition, the three-striped brand has launched its official corporate blog. The Group blog will provide insights into the adidas Group’s business and its company culture sharing the company’s passion for sport. Each week, adidas Group employees will write posts about their daily tasks and projects they work on. adidas Team including HR, Operations, Marketing, Social and Environmental Affairs and IT will be creating a positive image of the company behind the brands.

adidas has also launched the adizero F50, its first pair of soccer shoes with a cavity for the miCoach Speed Cell device.
