Coca-Cola Recognized for Packaging Design in the Mobius Awards

Coca-Cola walked away a double winner in the Mobius Awards, which annually recognize outstanding design work across several categories, including outdoor, packaging, point-of-purchase, print, television and more.

Coca-Cola and its honoured design partner Turner Duckworth took two of five awards in the Packaging Design category for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games packaging and the 2010 summer packaging. The Olympic Games packaging also won ‘Best of Show,’ the highest honor in the Mobius Awards with only one recipient in each of the 10 award categories.

«Coca-Cola’s design team collaborated with our agency partner Turner Duckworth to craft a holistic visual identity system that thoughtfully integrated the intrinsics of brand Coke, the spirit of optimism and consumers’ passion for Olympic athletes,» said Vince Voron, AVP, IMC Strategic Design, Coca-Cola North America.

In January 2010, Coca-Cola launched limited edition Olympic Games-themed collectible cans and FridgePacks featuring silhouettes inspired by some of the most popular Olympic Winter Games sports, such as figure skating, ice hockey, speedskating and snowboarding. An additional commemorative can featuring a contemporary interpretation of the Inukshuk, the symbol of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, was also released around the opening of the Games. Other Olympic Games-themed packaging included 20-ounce bottles, multipacks and 2-liter bottles, with a new silhouette available every few weeks through the Games.

Coca-Cola’s 2010 limited-edition summer cans hit store shelves just in time for Memorial Day weekend. Five different designs synonymous with summertime—including soccer balls, beach umbrellas, boats and flip-flops—were featured on 12-ounce cans with a new design debuting every few weeks through Labor Day. Other summer-themed packaging included 2-liters with a spatula and grill image; 12-packs with a sailboat and sunset; and 20-ounce bottles with sunglasses.

The list of the 2010 Mobius Awards’ winning designs in the Package Design category also includes Absolut—Flavour of the Tropics and Inish Turk Beg—seafood range, bacon range, to name a few.
