With less than a month left before the end of the world according to Mayan predictions, Old Spice launches a new online game which plays around the apocalypse theme. The brand presents the Dikembe Mutombo’s 4 1/2 Weeks to Save the World old-fashioned video game, which mirrors the philosophy of the Believe in Your Smellf campaign and Old Spice’s bold attitude, preserved by brand even in the toughest conditions.
“A video game made to stop an actual event that might happen if an ancient civilization was as smart as we think,” says the brand, encouraging its fans to try and save the world, at least on the screen. The game by Wieden + Kennedy Portland features another sport celebrity, retired NBA star Dikembe Mutombo as the face of the new product, and invites users to become him and save the world in 4 ½ weeks left before the apocalypses (the process of saving the world is split into a few stages). While waiting for the next jump (one per week), users can get deep into the planet and try to save the world by stopping music and encouraging Americans to vote. Sounds like nonsense, which it actually is.
One Old Spice fan called it a “truly awesome time waster” on Facebook, but is really that awesome? Old Spice is adding new faces, but doesn’t play with the macho theme much, so the promotions can soon become too predictable and less engaging. For instance, the latest “Believe in Your Smellf”ads featuring Greg Jennings were actually quite fun, but not exciting at all. Old Spice has less than a month to get back on the humorous rails.
