On June 7, Facebook started testing a new feature called ‘Tag Suggestions’. ‘Tag Suggestions’ was announced in December and has been available in the U.S. The feature that uses facial recognition to recommend people to tag in new user photos now available in most countries.
According to Bloomberg, Facebook is among U.S. companies that have faced scrutiny in the EU for possible privacy breaches. Google Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo! Inc. have been pushed by European data- protection officials to limit the amount of time they store online users’ search records. The group has also criticized Facebook for policy changes that could harm users’ privacy as the new face-recognition software to suggest people’s names to tag in pictures without their permission.
However, Facebook says users mostly like the feature. The company got rid of its ‘old habit’ of introducing new features without letting users know in advance. The online statement says that people add more than 100 million tags to photos on Facebook every day, so the feature will ease the process. If users dislike the feature it can be easily disabled in privacy settings.
“When we announced this feature last December, we explained that we would test it, listen to feedback and iterate before rolling it out more broadly. We should have been more clear with people during the roll-out process when this became available to them,” said Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes in an e-mailed statement.
In May Facebook presented brand tagging.
