Infiniti and Designboom announced shortlisted entries in the first round of the ‘Infiniti Digital Art Competition’ that was launched in spring.

The competition was launched by the luxury autobrand and the independent publication for design, architecture, art, photography and graphics in order to find the rising stars of digital art, and discover new talents from around the world. Participants were asked to design an interior installation piece and/or digital artwork for a building façade. The theme should have been the ‘Inspired Performance’, for installation in new centers that Infiniti is opening throughout Europe, where Infiniti has launched a new ad campaign ‘Since now, the perfect line is a curve’.

One of the shortlisted entries is ‘800 musical movement’, a conceptual instrument by Japanese designer Kouichi Okamoto. The work presents the computer-driven orchestration of individual analog note-playing devices, thus together creating complete songs and music, says Designboom.

The Okamoto’s project involves the creation of 800 original music boxes, mounted into the shape of the Infiniti logo onto a wooden board, measuring 10.2 x 6.9 feet. Each music box has a single tooth to play one tone. Connected to a computer system, music boxes are activated in turn to together create songs, harmonies, or ambient sounds out of the combined work of the individual tones. The system is controlled by computer but interactive, because a user can control the project in a variety of ways.

Infiniti will soon select six designs for installation, beginning with the first new center in Manchester, UK.
The next round of the ‘infiniti digital art competition’ begins this October.
