Nike likes it when sport celebrities unveil their ‘emotional excruciation’ before public. Earlier this year, the sportswear brand released a commercial featuring Tiger Woods listening to his late father’s reproaches because of the golf star’s adultery affair, and now it presents the new LeBron James advert, in which the athlete asks people to tell him what to do.
The celebrity basketball player is posing dozens of rhetorical questions to those watching this ad—but will he follow them? The video was developed by the Wieden & Kennedy agency, which has been the brand’s partner for a long time, as part of the «Rise» campaign after the wave of discussions over LeBron James’s decision to leave Cleveland Cavaliers and play next season for the Miami Heat. The 90-second spot begins with the scene where James is sitting in front of the camera in the studio, just like it was when he made the shocking announcement this July.
During the spot, he asks “What should I do” along with a number of other questions such as “Should I admit that I’ve made mistakes?”, “Should I remind you that I’ve done this before?” “Should I have my tattoo removed?”, “Should I tell you: I’m not a role model?” and many more. Judging from his tone, LeBron is not going to accept any of the possible advice. Maybe, the answer to all of them can be found in the iconic slogan of the brand—“Just do it.”
