Levi’s is Airing It Out

In an effort to save on energy, Levi Strauss & Co. is encouraging consumers to share their innovative ideas to aid dry clothing. Levi’s Care to Air contest is asking for unique ways and suggestions that augment or replace using a traditional clothesline and offer $10,000 in prizes to winners.

In recent research into lifecycle impacts, Levi’s found that nearly 60% of impact on the climate that can be associated with a pair of jeans occurs during the laundering by the owner. Of that laundering, they further found that over 80% of that impact was during the drying cycle of the washing process. Thus to reduce the carbon footprint their iconic jeans could possibly cause, Levi’s is endorsing air-drying via their Care to Air contest.

Using clotheslines to dry is an obvious solution to reducing energy usage versus automated dryers. Unfortunately 92 percent of US households have dryers and space to hang a clothesline in most urban dwellings is very difficult.

The contest, in being run by Myoo Create, will run through July 31. After the 31st, five finalists will be named. Two of the finalists will be selected by a panel of judges and the other three will be selected in voting by Myoo users. The winners will be announced August 16.

The contest is an expansion on Levi’s Care Tag For Our Planet campaign aimed at educating consumers on how to lower ecological impacts on the care of their clothing such as washing, line drying, and donating unused clothing to Goodwill.
