MINI is making it big for the upcoming Olympic Games in London by releasing a short action movie titled The Britalian Job, heavily inspired by the classic 1969 film The Italian Job. The 5:29 video, which celebrates the brand’s partnership with the Team GB and Paralympics GB, is revolving around a detective story that ends well.
The film is starring a roster of sport celebrities—former gold medalists, including Daley Thompson, James Cracknell, Jonathan Edwards and Matthew Pinsent, —who are rushing through the streets of London in their MINIs to retrieve a silver case with a set of gold medals, which was stolen by a bad girl, supermodel Jodie Kidd. The elite driving squad is behind the wheel of three super fast and maneuverable London 2012 Edition MINI Cooper vehicles, while the thief is making her way through the London streets on a supermoto. The spot pays homage to the capital by highlighting some of its landmarks including the Houses of Parliament, Knightsbridge and London Eye as well as draws a lot from the original movie. For instance, the cars are also driven through the Park Lane basement, and perform an intense chase in the Leadenhall market.
The Britalian Job short movie, directed by Top Gear lead director Phil Churchward, features a set of hilarious breath-taking stunts, including the one with the red, white and blue special edition MINIs performing a 10-meter jump in the end. The awesome driving was supervised and coordinated by Paul Swift, who is a multiple Guinness World Record holder and seven-time British Motorsport Champion, and knows just everything about dangerous, but spectacular stunts.
“The Italian Job is a classic and this was a great opportunity and the right time to have some fun with it in London. We wanted to make an exciting short film featuring British sporting heroes and three MINIs as the stars, in and around some of London’s greatest landmarks, as the city prepares for The Games. We hope everybody enjoys it,” comments Graham Biggs, Corporate Communications Director at BMW Group UK.
