“Count on Kobe,” Nike Says

Nike has released a new film starring one of its most celebrated ambassadors, Kobe Bryant. The new video piece “Count on Kobe,” developed by Wieden + Kennedy of Portland, Ore., promotes the KOBE 8 SYSTEM, the lightest and lowest performance shoe of the baseball genius. In the spot, the female voice over explains how the world works and how Kobe works in it—very soon it becomes clear that he is also a world, a unique universe. “Some things in this world are certainties. The sun will rise. Rain will fall. And Kobe Bryant will dominate on the basketball court,” says the brand in the press release.

The underlying message is this: After 17 years in the league, Bryant’s drive to dominate and constantly improve his game is part of the world’s natural order. This is the way it was. This is the way it is. This is the way it will be. Count on Kobe,” calls Nike.

The spot celebrates the unparalleled talents—unique drive, skill and commitment—of the basketball star, and lists the sources of this powerful energy. The film revolves around Kobe’s practice regiment, diet, performance on the court, and of course his Nike KOBE 8 SYSTEM lightest and lowest performance shoe, which helps him achieve the best results.

The new film was directed and edited by award-winning film editor Angus Wall, who was behind other Nike’s videos starring Kobe (“Celebration” and “Black Mamba”). “I start every day with the desire to be the best, and I’m committed to doing what it takes to win and to being fearless on the court. I want to be the player my teammates and fans can count on day in and day out,” shared Bryant.

Nike is also launching its new football Nike Mercurial shoe, and to support the release, teh brand is unveiling a new promotional film starring Cristiano Ronaldo.
