Saint Laurent Celebrating Rock Music Legends in the “Music Project” Portrait Series

The fashion giant Saint Laurent (previously Yves Saint Laurent) has released a portrait series to celebrate its long-term relationship with the world of rock music. These two dimensions don’t seem to belong to the same universe, but in fact the leading artists from the rock field adore fashion labels and vice versa. This deep connection was reflected in the Saint Laurent Music Project, photographed by the house’s creative director Hedi Slimane. The series includes black-and-white images featuring rock icons including Marilyn Manson, Kim Gordon (of Sonic Youth), Courtney Love, and Ariel Pink.

The series of 10 images has been premiered on the Dazed Digital website. The rock music legends are wearing Saint Laurent’s seasonal and permanent collections in the stills that helps render the artists unique style and powerful charisma. For instance, Kim Gordon is photographed as a mannish and ultimately stylish woman, while Courtney Love is represented as a rebel girl and a poser bending over her guitar in two stills and wearing a crown in the other one. The men, Marilyn Manson and Ariel Pink, look very decently in the photos—both of them are wearing black bikers. Marilyn shows off his epic makeup, and Ariel reveals his chipped dark nail polish as a tribute to the rock music style.

The stills are the latest contribution to the Rock Diary series by Mr. Slimane that features photos of both aspiring music artists and celebrated talents. Dazed Digital writes that the Music Project follows the designer’s history of “clothing Bowie, Jagger, The Libertines, The Kills, Franz Ferdinand; [and] commissioning show soundtracks by Daft Punk, Ty Segall and Thee Oh Sees as well as shooting Sky Ferreira for Saint Laurent’s pre-fall lookbook.
