Stella McCartney Is Being Critisized for Not Adding Enough Red to the UK Olympics Kit

Stella McCartney unveiled her adidas Team GB kit at London’s Tower of London yesterday, on March 22.  Stella McCartney was tasked to develop the sportswear that features adidas‘s technological advancements such as Climacool moisture management in clothing and footwear.

The new kit features the deconstructed Union Jack flag printed on T-shirts. The red, which is psychologically considered to be the color of victory, has been removed from the white and blue of the flag to appear on shinpads, shoes and necklines. That was the reason for sport psychologists’ disapproval of the new design, reports The Guardian.

«Obviously she has designed these from a fashion point of view and was not taking into account the possible effects that might have on performance,» said Professor Robert Barton of the uniforms, «Given there’s an obvious justification for [including more red] and given the effects that we and other scientists have found, it does seem like a mistake.»

So, now British Olympics athletes will have to prove their skills nevermind the color palette of their new uniforms. Meanwhile, a replica line of the British kit including swimwear and cycling attire will be available at retail outlets starting April.

The USA Team has also unveiled its Ralph Lauren-designed Olympic Village kit. The looks are created in a recognizable Ralph Laurent style. It also leverages the idea of flag colors and includes vintage-inspired polos, pants and sweaters in red, white and blue color. The replica line includes jackets, glasses, luggage, shoes, hats, belts and beach towels that go on sale online and in stores May 15.

Another fashion icon, Giorgio Armani, has designed kits for the Italian Olympic team based on Armani’s sportswear line EA7.
