Walgreens already has free mobile apps for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry phones that enable consumers to refill prescriptions by scanning the bar code on a prescription bottle or by entering a prescription number, says Mobile Commerce Daily. More than 2 million people now use Walgreens prescription refill reminder and prescription-ready text alerts.

“This is another way in which we’re enhancing our mobile apps and creating greater value for our mobile customers who use the app,” said Rich Lesperance, director of marketing for e-commerce at Walgreens, Deerfield, IL.

“Today’s consumers are seeking value and convenience, and we’re entering the peak holiday shopping season,” he said.

Walgreens’ mobile strategy will help advance retail sales. Mobile coupons will provide customers with a feature they are looking for in mobile. The retailer polled its Facebook fans, asking them what feature they would most like to see in the Walgreens’ mobile app and the most pointed to mobile coupons.

Walgreens has mobile scanning devices at all of the more than 7,700 Walgreens stores nationwide, and the company’s representatives say, the mobile coupon program will be the largest in the United States. Walgreens has not yet unveiled details about any post-holiday mobile coupon programs.
