YouTube and Hollywood to Produce a User-Generated Documentary

YouTube is collaborating with famed filmmakers Kevin MacDonald («State of Play») and Ridley Scott («Robin Hood») as well as with thousands of internet users from around the globe to create a unique documentary about one single day. The project, which is supported by LG, will result in the full-length film “Life in a Day” featuring the most interesting videos centered on only 24 hours from a life of those, who will upload their footage to YouTube.com/LifeinaDay.

The user-generated experimental project kicks off on July 24, 2010—this day will become the ‘key character’ of the spots and the film itself. The users are encouraged to tell the world how they live, bring their personal attitude to what’s going on around them and try to be as open and imaginative as possible. The amateur filmmakers are asked to keep from shooting trademarks, clips, movies, etc. to avoid product placement—this being the only restriction. The works are to be uploaded between July 24 and July 31 to the Life in a Day channel on YouTube.

The the finished product directed by McDonald and produced by Scott, will debut at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in January, and the will be simultaneously broadcast on YouTube. Those participants, whose videos will be used for the film, will be mentioned in the closing credits as co-directors, and 20 of them will head to the Festival to be introduced as a part of the creative group.

«‘Life in a Day’ is a time capsule that will tell future generations what it was like to be alive on the 24th of July, 2010. It is a unique experiment in social filmmaking, and what better way to gather a limitless array of footage than to engage the world’s online community,» comments MacDonald.
