YouTube showing pride for LGTB athlets, launching the #ProudToPlay digital effort

To celebrate the power and success of LGBT athletes in international sports competitions, YouTube is launching a new effort that features a range of sport celebrities who have declared they are gays or lesbians. The idea of the 2-minute video, the centerpiece of the effort, is to show that everyone has the right to be what he or she is and play the sport he or she really loves.

Sports bring together people from all backgrounds and experiences through a shared passion, and YouTube shares that spirit of connecting diverse communities to make a difference,” says YouTube’s recent blogpost. The video has been released ahead of the forthcoming World Cup in Brazil and is dedicated to LGBT Pride month, celebrated in June. More videos about the LGBT community and sports will be shared on YouTube’s Spotlight Channel over the course of this month.

To support the talk about the LGBT movement in sports, YouTube encourages the audience to share their thoughts in videos using the #ProudToPlay hashtag, explaining what being #ProudToPlay means to them. The effort is inspired by the idea of the last year’s #ProudToLove campaign.

We applaud the courage and openness of athletes at all levels who have come out and admire their teammates, friends, families, and supporters who are all proving that it doesn’t matter who you are or who you love—what matters is that you put forward your best effort,” say Raymond Braun, YouTube Marketing Manager, and Lauren Pachaly, Consumer Marketing Manager, in the blogpost. “We stand with our community in the belief that youth everywhere should all have the same opportunities to grow up and pursue their dreams and passions, on or off the field.”

As part of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride month, another social media giant, Facebook, has revealed a collection of 28 vibrant stickers that celebrate LGBT relationship.
