Two weeks ago, a 10-man team from Girvan demonstrated their warm love for their work as well as honoured a former workmate, Jackie Ross. When the cooper, who worked 42 years at Grants’, retired, his colleagues decided to do something extraordinary in his honour. They took the last barrel he made, de-constructed it for the climb, carried the pieces to the peak of the Britain’s highest mountain (1,344 meters) and rebuilt the Glenfiddich barrel again.
Team leader Jason Roberts commented that it was a proper tribute to Jackie Ross. He said: “We wanted to do something special to mark the end of Jackie Ross’ career. And Jackie’s final cask has now gone to hold our company’s famous Glenfiddich malt whisky. It’s something really unique —malt whisky from a cask that’s been to the Ben Nevis summit.”
The mount-climbing team also managed to raise more than £1000 to be donated to sport communities in Girvan including Girvan under-10 and under-19 football teams, the Muay Thai class, and a sport club run by cooper Tam Houston.
