Budweiser versus Budweiser

The battle between American and Czech Budweisers starts again. This week representatives of the American brand used a new European Directive on trademarks to renew hostilities.

The worldwide conflict between them began in 1911 and was thought to have been settled in 2000 when the Court of Appeal in England ruled the two companies could share the name Budweiser. But rival brewers will face each other in the court again, and Budweiser from the USA claims «it had stolen a march on its old enemy».

«Apparently the first of these was as long ago as 1911. So we are nearing a 100 year war. Many lawyers and their families in many places must be grateful that these two parties apparently cannot produce a once and for all world-wide settlement,» said Lord Justice Jacob.
