Google Inviting U.S. Tech-Savvy Consumers to Test Google Glass

Google is offering its Google Glass product for sale in the U.S. now, however, the Internet-connected glasses will be available only to those who is selected by the company as an ‘Explorer’ and, more importantly, at a considerable price of $1,500 plus tax.

First unveiled in early April 2012, Glass is a groundbreaking innovation in wearable computing that represents augmented reality voice-operated lenses allowing the wearer to take pictures and video on the go, share them instantly, get directions and answers to some general questions, send messages with the voice and more.

Through the end of February, U.S. residents of 18 and older can request the high-tech piece on the dedicated website. The company has a list of requirements to be met by the person, who wants to become one of the first to own Glass.

We’re looking for bold, creative individuals who want to join us and be a part of shaping the future of Glass. We’d love to make everyone an Explorer, but we’re starting off a bit smaller. We’re still in the early stages, and while we can’t promise everything will be perfect, we can promise it will be exciting,” writes Google on the page.

The company asks applicants to imagine what they would do with Glass if they had it. They are invited to share their ideas using Google+ or Twitter, and each post or tweet must go with the hashtag #ifihadglass. Google wants the submissions to be brief—the idea should be clear from the start without any further explanations. The application must be a text of 50 words or less and it can go with up to 5 photos and a short video (15 seconds max). The applicant must follow the company on Google+ (+ProjectGlass) or Twitter (@projectglass), since the shortlisted candidates will be contacted directly via a personal message on these platforms.

The submissions are accepted through February 27, and there are only 8,000 pieces available for the public test. The chosen applicants will be invited to become a Glass Explorer and will be also asked to pre-order a Glass Explorer Edition for $1,500 plus tax. To get a deeper insight into the opportunities Glass provides, the explorers will be invited to attend the specially organized “pick-up experience” in NY, San Francisco and LA.
