Google Map Maker Launched in U.S.

Google has made Make Maker function available in the U.S. This feature allows users to edit Google Maps by providing more information on their local area. The function is designed with the aim to facilitate the orientation, finding routes, specific business enterprises and just places of interest that other traditional maps normally don’t show.

So far the feature is available in 183 countries of the world. During the editing, a user must be signed in their Google account, mark a place or a route and submit their edits for further review and approval, which may be carried out by other local Google Maps users or those authorized to evaluate the edit. Providing your personal data to Google Maps (for instance, specifying ‘your girlfriend’s house) is not allowed. The innovation is created for the good of the community.

Also, Google has integrated StreetView and advanced search features with Google Maps, which means you may search for any places you want to visit for shopping, entertainment, education in an area of your choice.

Since the launch of this function overseas, it has proved a great success. Users took over the initiative and created very detailed maps of their local areas.

In an interview to washingtonpost.com, Map Maker tech lead Lalitesh Katragadda said, “When we launched in Romania, it was blank. Every road, every building was created by users.”
