The 45-minute documentary is all about the ‘Heineken way’ in brewing, marketing and serving beer. Heineken breweries are based in Zoeterwoude and Den Bosch, Holland, and use the recipe that is almost 150-year old. The movie follows the factory workers through all the steps of beer production and emphasizes Heineken’s attention to detail and commitment to quality.
The documentary further explores into the long history of the brand and its traditions as well as passion and dedication of Heineken employees which makes this multinational company a united, solid corporate entity.
Special attention is paid to the environmental efforts by Heineken, particularly in the issues related to saving water and energy. For instance, by watching the documentary, the viewer will learn that:
— The Heineken power plant generates enough energy to power 20,000 households, the unused energy is exported to the local energy grid.
— Since 1999 the brewery has increased its energy usage efficiency by 25%. The brewery extracts biogas in the wastewater treatment plant and uses it to generate electricity.
— Every year Heineken moves 50,000 large 40-feet containers from Zoeterwoude to the Rotterdam harbour. Previously, the beer producer would be responsible for 70% of the truck traffic between the two cities. Following the opening of the Alpherium container terminal last year, 95% of this road traffic has been replaced by more environment friendly and efficient transportation over water.
Jean-François van Boxmeer, Chairman of the Executive Board/CEO Heineken N.V said, «It’s a huge honour for us that National Geographic has made this film about Heineken. It provides unique insights in the Heineken beer, brand and company, and shows the great people behind every glass and bottle of Heineken beer. It really illustrates that quality, entrepreneurship and passion are at the center of everything we do. When I recently saw a preview of the documentary, it filled me with pride that I work for Heineken and that I am part of the success of this company.»
