IKEA Plants a ‘Surrealistika’ Birch Tree in London

IKEA, the renowned Swedish furniture and home decorations chain, has created a divine tree sculpture, which will appear at Barbican Center in London on August 12. The unique installation was made by IKEA designers and artists to pay tribute to inspiration and unconventional thinking, which underlay the work by any person of art as well as people behind innovative designs for sustainable home appliances.

The sculpture “Surrealistika” is a giant white Silver Birch tree, intertwined with things from modern kitchen. This kind of tree was chosen to become the key element because it’s believed to protect people from evil spirits and also symbolizes of motherhood, fertility and eternal love. In modern world, it may become the symbol people’s strive for sustainable appliances, which will ‘defend’ them from ecological catastrophes.

Surrealistika was born out of our belief that without creative thinking, there would be no inspirational design. Creativity sits at the core of our approach to product design as every day we must challenge ourselves to come up with even better ideas that suit our production capabilities as well as our customers’ needs, tastes and budgets. And never at the expense of good quality, inspirational design and the environment. We chose to depict a kitchen as not only is this where we spend nearly a month of our time every year, it’s where we can make a big difference to the impact our lifestyles at home have on the environment. At IKEA we offer a host of solutions to help people live a more sustainable life in their kitchens and save money along the way. Through Surrealistika we want to encourage people to think about the sustainable way of life, especially when it comes to recycling their household waste and saving water and energy,” commented Anna Crona, marketing director for IKEA UK & Ireland.
