IKEA Tells More about Swedish Cuisine

Do you know people who can tell much about national Swedish cuisine? Or maybe you are one of those who specialize in it? If the answers to both questions are “no,” the new online classes run by Chef Jørn and sponsored by IKEA will help you learn more about the unique world of northern dishes. As it may turn out, these can be as delicious and filling as the Italian menu and in some way as exotic as the Japanese one.

Last month, the global retailer of furniture and household ware published a cookbook with photography by Carl Kleiner who demonstrated that raw baking ingredients may be real pieces of art. This time the brand and the chef are ‘making art’ by mixing all of them to cook Cloudberry Trifle, Chocolate Fondue, Hallakaka, Glogg, Rice Pudding and many more in a series of educational videos on IKEA’s YouTube channel. Most of Swedish dishes are made from processed ingredients—due to the severe Scandinavian weather conditions, local people had to preserve the food in a lot of methods, ranging from drying, salting, smoking (for meat or fish) to boiling it down with sugar (for berries and rare fruits),— and the spots are created to celebrate the northern cooking traditions by showing that they perfectly fit into the modern environment.

The new web-episodes seem to be heavily inspired by the similar project launched by Electrolux this summer, with the last one having a way better execution. On IKEA’s YouTube channel, some users argue that the new project is made only to promote the retailer’s ranges—the major part of the spots is dedicated to showing products purchased from the retailer, still some people will definitely find the new project quite funny and even informational. All the items mentioned in the videos can be bought from the IKEA stores. To find more recipes aspiring cooks can go to the www.info.ikea-usa.com website.
