Hong Kong branch of McDonald’s, having researched the market thoroughly, announced it plans to launch “McWeddings”, a new offer, in its three restaurants in Hong Kong. The service is expected to launch in January 2011.

Why Hong Kong? This is a place where wedding is considered a huge event in a family life that requires arranging a wedding buffet for over 100 invitees. McDonalds decided to make a bold offer for newly-weds to save up their money and came up with all-inclusive wedding packages for a price that starts at £250, according to www.dailymail.co.uk.

Along with traditional American food that is served on the menu (French fries, hamburgers), wedding packages imply traditional Chinese wedding games slightly adapted for McDonald’s menu and settings (like eating a French fry instead of a cherry by just-married and kissing), baked apple pie wedding cake and a dress made of balloons.

So, getting married in McDonald’s may turn out to be cheap and original in comparison to a traditional wedding in a 5-star hotel restaurant. However, tying the knot in this fast-food restaurant may imply two significant drawbacks: first, you’ve got to have an alcohol-free wedding, since no alcoholic drinks are allowed in family-friendly restaurants. And secondly, the restaurant will not be offering any special treatment to newly-weds or their guests. They’ll just have to wait in line along with other customers since the restaurant prefers to be open for business according to its policy.

McDonald’s is excited about their new service. Helen Cheung, Hong Kong McDonald’s director of corporate communications, says:  «Over the past two years, we’ve started receiving calls from people who want to have a wedding party in our restaurants. There are about 10 calls a month. People said they’d dated here, or met here, and wanted to get married here. We see this as a business opportunity.»
