Levi’s Presents ‘Outside In: The Story of Art In the Streets’ Film

Levi’s has released a new art-inspired product as part of its ongoing collaboration with the MOCA museum started in Los Angeles in April—the jeanswear brand opened its new Levi’s Workshop at the ‘Art In the Streets’ exhibition of the museum and on May 24 it has released a hilarious short movie ‘Outside In: The Story of Art In the Streets,’ which showcases the process of arranging the event and interviews with graffiti influencers, “documents the artist’s creative process, their pitfalls with the law, the poetic impermanence of their craft and the artists’ evolution from the back seat of a cop car to the walls of a well-respected institution” as the synopsis states.

The video, directed by Alex Stapleton (‘Corman’s World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel’), features nearly 30 celebrated street artists including Shepard Fairey, Lee Quiñones, Revok, Martha Cooper and Invader to name a few, who share their own views on what graffiti means to them, and why such a display, which demonstrates how this kind of art has been developing from 1970s through today, is so important. As part of the collaboration, last month Levi’s teamed up with Juxtapoz Magazine to release a lovely issue all dedicated to the new exhibition, featuring photos and stories about stunning representatives of the movement, but of course, the new work, ‘Outside In,’ is more relevant to the theme of the third Levi’s—Film—workshop. ‘Art in the Streets,’ the first major U.S. museum exhibition of the history of graffiti and street art, is running from April 17 through August 8, and during these four months, inside the Geffen Contemporary where the exhibit is taking place, Levi’s will be releasing new short films in conjunction with the theme of the grandiose display and arranging sessions with experts of the film industry for emerging talents in the field, who can access the Workshop’s equipment rentals, edit suites and other resources free of charge, helping them create new video works (the sketches by students as well as all video material related to the event can be viewed here). From May 19 through to June 12, the Levi’s Film Workshop is arranging screenings, events and hands-on workshops revolving around skate films—the brand invited the talents, who discover the world of street sports culture in their videos.
