The 2011 Dieline Awards ceremony took place in Chicago on June 24. The Dieline Awards got bigger and became a headline of the first annual The Dieline Package Design Conference, at HOW Design Live.
39 winners across 13 different categories (3 categories more than last year) were awarded a Dieline Award, and one Best of Show winner was chosen as the grand winner. The awards were judged by a highly esteemed panel of 12 industry experts, and awarded based on quality of design. Debbie Millman, President of the AIGA and President of Design at Sterling Brands, served at the chairman of the judges.
The Best of Show award got Puma for it’s Clever Little Bag—an innovative replacement for the traditional shoebox. It’s a bag and box combination consisting of a flat cardboard sheet that folds into a box structure to hold the shoes, and fits seamlessly into a cloth bag, which keeps the box shape of the cardboard and protects the shoes. The ability to re-use the bag is a fundamental part of this design.
Food A. The first place got Steve’s Leaves watercress package with its ‘one serve’ portion size, which allows people to mix and match varieties instead of just buying one big bag.
Food B. Sugarillos attempted to literally interpret the pack content: ‘One spoonful of sugar’ and got the first place. Each sachet presents an illustration of a classical spoon, the packing invites the user to a more decorative daily cupper.
Food C. Moonstruck Chocolate won with a chocolate bar packaging reflecting the company’s main feature—handcraft. The illustrations and typography are a hand-cut paper style. The package offers a multi-sensory experience.
Non-Alcoholic Beverage. The Coca-Cola Summer 2010 summer campaign design by Turner Duckworth won in this category just like the previous year.
Bath, Beauty, Health + Personal. Sir Richard’s condom company, which donates one condom in developing countries for every condom they sell in the U.S. got the first award for an appealing ‘non-pharmaceutical-like’ package design.
Home, Garden + Pets. Cakes, pies, and candies OH MY! Kleenex tissue teases with 4 confectionary box design and triumphs for the second year in succession.
Books, Office + Art Supplies, Toys, Clothes, Accessories + Promotional. A shopping bag by Prompt Design for KoKoa Hut can ‘talk’ to consumers as it consists of many little square boxes, which can be flipped up to create any image or a letter.
Electronics, Technology, Movies + CDs. The Jambox bluetooth speaker packed in a ‘retro’ looking shoebox, with a silkscreened boom box graphic printed on the lid. The caption ‘that was then…’ builds anticipation while creating a cultural context for the product.
Spirits. Christmas Absinthe vanquished the jury with a bespoke sophisticated design of the limited 250 bottles collection.
Beer, Malt Beverages + Tobacco. The trendy, minimalist design on the Heineken aluminium bottle designed with UV-sensitive ink illuminates under black lights, revealing a sky filled with shooting stars.
Wine + Champagne. A series of Rioja wines inspired by the Seven Deadly Sins (Siete Pecados). The breathtaking design of the bottles reflect each one of the sins.
Student. This redesign for Paulin‘s hardware fasteners by Man Wai Wong focuses on usability. Constructed from one piece of recycled paper without adhesive, this box can be assembled into a stable, personal color-coded storage unit.
