YouTube UK Invites to Watch a Movie

It seems that over a few years, we will not have to go to the cinema or even take a disc to watch a movie—everything will be online and for free. Last Friday, 27 August, YouTube launched another free movie section, this time in the UK, inviting people to watch hits of the film industry for free and without any time limitations on the web. To date, there are more than 400 full-length movies of various genres, including action, horror, comedy and animated films, with yet more to come.

The launch of the movie section on YouTube comes as a result of the deal between Google, the owner of the video-content website, and Blinkbox, UK movie and television streamer, as well as several US studios with Sony Pictures among them. Visitors to the hub can watch a variety of movies including Jackie Chan movies, “Hotel New Hampshire” starring Rob Lowe and Jodie Foster, Fritz Lang‘s 1927 Sci-Fi masterpiece “Metropolis,” “The Dark Side of the Sun” with Brad Pitt, and many more.

This is one of many efforts to ensure people can find all the different kinds of video they want to see, from bedroom vlogs and citizen journalism reports to full-length films and TV shows. This is a first step and we hope film lovers enjoy the wide range of titles our partners have made available,” commented Donagh O’Malley, YouTube’s head of video partnerships.

The range of movies on the video-content website will be expanded as Google signs deal with other studios. YouTube is already steaming videos from Channel 4 and Five in the UK and has a similar movie section for the US residents only, launched in April and featuring free and paid films from MGM, Lionsgate and Sony Pictures.
