IKEA Created an Apartment in a Parisian Metro Station

IKEA believes that its stores are not the only space where the brand’s houseware goods can be showcased and often takes them to city streets, opera or underground to demonstrate that IKEA goods perfectly fit any settings and can create proper atmosphere anywhere. Now, the international furniture retailer has come to a metro station in Paris again to promote its items with a new twist: the brand is not just exposing sofas and bookcases—it got five Parisians to spend almost a week in a small apartment fully furnished with IKEA pieces. The new live installation, which is developed by the UBI BENE agency, is currently on display in the Auber metro station.

For six days, January 9-14, the five housemates will be leading their routine life full of simple moments like going to and coming from work, watching TV, cooking dinner, throwing parties, etc. in front of commuters. They are living in the small space of just 54m2, and with this effort IKEA aims to literally demonstrate that its goods can make just any apartment comfortable and functional, no matter how small it is.

Every day, IKEA summarizes the highlights of the day in a short video and posts it to its YouTube channel— the spots can be also watched by the passengers of the Auber station on the screens installed at the location. IKEA is also inviting its Facebook fans to host a party in the unique ‘model’ apartment for their 12 friends on January 13.

In early 2008, IKEA launched an unparalleled project dubbed Mark lives in IKEA—a man, comedian/filmmaker Mark Malkoff spent 6 days living in the retailer’s store while his own apartment was fumigated. In fall 2010, the brand ‘lent’ its London store to 100 cats for one night as part of its ‘feline’ ad campaign. What is IKEA going to do next? Go to space?
