PepsiCo Does Not Support Homophobes

PepsiCo has made an official apology to gay people for sponsoring an intolerant concert in Uganda. At his performance singer Beenie Man appeared on the stage with a provocative song encouraging to kill lesbians and gay men by cutting their throats.

The concert was arranged on December 5, and soon afterwards it was followed by protests from Change.org, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, OutRage!, other organizations and common people, who were indignant over the homophobic event. Pepsi had nothing else to do but to express regrets over its sponsoring Beenie Man and said that it would try its best to prevent anything of that kind in the future.

We are appalled by the performer’s lyrics and find them repugnant,” the company said in a statement to Change.org. “Our bottling partner in Uganda was not aware of the performer’s views and never would have sponsored the concert with this knowledge…Moving forward, we will work closely with our bottling partners to be more vigilant about the events associated with our brands.”
