Stockholm Becomes a Canvas with an iPhone app Created by M&C Saatchi

Stockholm Art Week encourages anyone in the capital of Sweden to become an artist and join the powerful art movement using digital technologies. During the event (February 11—17), an iPhone app is launched—the application created by M&C Saatchi Stockholm and developed by Sparkling Zoo, which can be downloaded here, enables you to paint with your feet in the digital space and see the result in the real life.

Using GPS, the app captures movements of the iPhone user as he or she is walking along the streets of Stockholm, and then helps convert all these steps into an actual piece of art. The free application “transfers this info to an artist who’ll paint the movements on a real canvas.” The digital brush (users can choose the colour within the app) is active for 15 minutes only, but it can be “turned on” as many times as a user wants.

It’s hard to imagine how all the movements get integrated into a single artwork, but people can see how it all happens with their own eyes here—the canvas is coming to life LIVE on a dedicated page. Every day, between 2 PM and 5 PM (GMT+1), they can see this happening at the Stockholm studio of the artist, engaged in the project.

The final piece will be unveiled at the Stockholm Art Week closing party on February 17. After that, the artwork will be auctioned on the net—this art and entertainment effort has a humanitarian twist as well, since the surplus generated through the auction will be donated to local art projects.
