TreeHugger, the leading media outlet dedicated to covering news on “the people, ideas, projects, and memes that are pushing green into the mainstream,” is presenting the winners of its third annual Best of Green Awards. The team behind the project looked though numerous examples of doing good to nature and selected over one hundred winners in eight major categories, who are being announced during this week (April 4—8). TreeHugger also invited audience to partake in determining their favourites—over 50 nominees got the second annual Best of Green 2011 Readers’ Choice Awards based on people’s choice.
The best eco-practices, green-minded celebrities, products, services, business, politicians, websites, Tweeter feeds, countries, mobile apps, concepts, etc. were split into eight categories: Business + Politics, Cars + Transportation, Food + Health, Culture + Celebrity, Science + Technology, Design + Architecture, and Travel + Nature. The list of winners includes both global brands and local ones, dozens of them, and here we will feature only some of those who were shortlisted to appear in the list of 2011 Best of Green Awards.
TreeHugger named Nike as the Best Major Brand Doing Green for its strong commitment to produce its sportswear apparel using greener technologies, sustainable fabrics (recyclable PET for making the World Cup jerseys; footwear produced from manufacturing waste, and more), plus its Environmental Apparel Design Tool. The brand also launched a new storyboard hub, The Better World, for those who want to know more about its sustainable efforts.
Levi’s Water>Less jeans were selected as the Best Jeans—the jeans rage is produced with less use of water (the innovative way of making those jeans allows to reduce water consumption— on average, 28% per pair and up to 96% for some products in the brand’s range). Patagonia was named as the Best U.S.-Based Casual Brand for working “rigorously to minimize the impact clothing production has on the environment by using solar power,” as well as donating 1% of all sales to grassroots environmentalism groups and running the Common Threads Program as well as organizing a range of other eco-minded activities.
As for the vehicles, a family-friendly electric auto Nissan LEAF was named the Best Electric Car on the Market (readers selected Chevrolet Volt), and Tesla Model S was named the Best Upcoming Electric Car (Ford Focus Electric was the Reader’s Choice in this nomination).
